CHENNAI: Two men drowned in a river near Palani in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Ponnusamy, 40, of Manur village near Palani and Saravanan, 20, of Coimbatore.
Ponnusamy, who was working in Coimbatore, organised an ear-piercing ceremony for his two children on Sunday and had invited his relatives and friends. Saravanan was also invited.
Ponnusamy and Saravanan went to take bath in the Shanmuganathi on Sunday morning. They ventured into the deeper part of the river and drowned.
Alerted by fellow villagers and Ponnusamy’s relatives, a team from the Keeranur police station and fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot. They recovered the bodies.
The bodies were shifted to Palani Government Hospital for postmortem. A large number of grief-stricken relatives and villagers thronged the hospital.
