Nagpur: A 65-year-old woman was killed while 11 others sustained injuries after a speeding pickup vehicle rammed into a six-seater auto on Saturday evening on the service road on Lihgaon-Kapsi road in Kalamna. Police have registered a case of rash driving and death due to negligence against the driver of the pickup vehicle who is currently absconding.
The deceased has been identified as Bhimabai Wankhede, while the injured are Sita Sabarghate, Mirabai Rajurkar, Kanchan Shahu, Bali Shahu, Lata Shahu, Anu Yadav, Sunita, Prema Shahu and two unidentified women along with the auto driver Shubham.
According to the police, all these women regularly used to go to Lihgaon in the auto for labour work. The women were returning from Lihgaon to Nagpur on Saturday when the pickup vehicle coming from opposite direction rammed into the auto, leaving the auto overturned and injuring the passengers. The driver of the pickup vehicle fled the spot leaving behind his four-wheeler.
Locals rushed the injured to a nearby private hospital where Bhimabai was declared brought dead. Most of the women sustained minor injuries except two who are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Kalamna police also received a call from control room and rushed to the accident spot. They also visited the hospital and took statements of the injured. Cops have seized the pickup vehicle and launched a search operation to nab the driver.
