Greens allege encroachments on wetlands in the absence of officials during Onam season

Four special squads have been constituted in the district to check the illegal wetland and paddy field filling attempts taking advantage of the Revenue Department officials’ absence during the oncoming Onam holidays. This will be in addition to the district-level squad functioning at the Collectorate.

The squads will operate in Kozhikode, Koyilandy, Thamarassery and Vadakara taluks. Helpline numbers too have been made available for the public to exchange confidential information on unauthorised land filling attempts.

According to officials, the special squads will be active for more than a week. The confidential complaints can also be communicated to the village officers, Agriculture Department officials and the geologist, they added.

Revenue officials said the squads would be functioning directly under the supervision of the tahsildars concerned.

They said incidents traced by the squads would be directly reported to the district administration.
