CHANDIGARH: The UT district
court on Saturday stayed the arrest of five trainee tennis players of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Academy (CLTA), Sector 10, in the case of sexually harassing and
stalking a
minor girl tennis player of the academy.
The arrest has been stayed until the juvenile board ascertains whether the accused are juveniles or not. Accordingly, the court directed the give accused to appear before the juvenile board within a week.
The defence has been stating that the accused trainee players are juvenile and hence the trial would begin only once the juvenile board decides on the age of the accused.
In the case, the girl’s father alleged that five trainees of the Chandigarh Academy of Rural Tennis (CHART) tried to outrage the modesty of his 15-year-old daughter and were sexually harassing and stalking her at the CLTA for the past three months. He said that his daughter joined the CLTA in March 2019 and the boys started stalking her and passing lewd remarks since then. All the accused are stated to be from Punjab and Haryana.
Even when the girl tried to stay away from them, the boys continued the harassment, the father alleged. He said that three of them touched her inappropriately and passed lewd comments on May 8. The authorities then threatened to ruin his daughter’s tennis career, he alleged.
According to the allegations of the father, after the suspension of the three boys, their friends and the other two boys continued stalking her and harassing her in order to take revenge. When he raised the issue with the CLTA, no action was taken against them. One day, both the boys allegedly tried to outrage her modesty in the academy, after which he decided to file a police complaint, after which the police registered a case.
However, cops said that one of the accused also alleged that he was thrashed and threatened by the complainant last month. On his statement, the police have registered a case against the father of the girl.
The matter of sexual harassment of minor girls at the CLTA has also reached the apex court and the SC is treating the matter as a PIL, with a hearing in the case scheduled on September 9.
In a complaint to the Chief Justice of India, a Punjab-based NGO stated that the UT police are not taking any action against the accused and are instead shielding them. It also stated that despite the names of chief operating officer and chief coach being mentioned in the complaint, the police have not registered a case against them. Chandigarh police are waiting for another “Unnao rape case” to take place, the NGO wrote.
