GHMC for not taking up fogging in the affected areas, the court asked for a report by September 11 on the steps taken to contain the flare up of dengue and medical care extended to patients in government hospitals.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan said people dying of dengue and viral fevers was alarming. "The state is in an emergency-like situation," the Chief Justice said.
"Spreading of dengue and viral diseases in Telangana is at its peak because of which people are dying," he said.
He also said press reports pointed out how the government hospitals lacked medicines, infrastructure, doctors and paramedical staff and that the situation was dismal.
The Chief Justice said newspaper reports had also talked about GHMC not taking up fogging in residential areas hit by dengue. More than 60% of the people had fallen ill because of dengue. The bench said this while dealing with two PILs which questioned the government on the steps taken to contain dengue.
Chief Justice Chauhan directed advocate general BS Prasad to inform the court by September 11 as to what steps had been taken by the government to deal with a large number of patients flocking to government hospital. “The report should also mention if the hospitals have sufficient medicines, proper infrastructure and doctors to tackle the dengue cases.”
The Chief Justice said the entire medical fraternity, including the government and private hospitals, should rise to the occasion and tackle it. Petitioner Dr M Karuna said Hyderabad and the state are facing almost a dengue epidemic. Kruthi Kalaga, counsel for another petitioner L Pavan Kumar, blamed GHMC for reacting slowly to the emerging situation.
Prasad, however, said the government was taking the necessary steps to deal with the situation.
“The government has directed the private hospitals to extend service to patients hit by dengue. Fogging has been taken up in places where dengue is at peak,” he informed the bench.
