Edu dept bans thermocol for making school projects

LUCKNOW: Days after the UP government banned all plastic and thermocol items in the state, Basic Siksha Parishad - the apex body monitoring primary education in the state - has put a blanket ban on the use of thermocol for making school projects or other activities. The students have to use an alternative material like a cardboard for their projects.
Teachers have also been barred from using thermocol boards for decorations in pre-nursery classes. The teachers' body has welcomed the move, saying that the decision would help in making class projects economical and children will also learn to put waste to use.
Ruby Singh, secretary, Basic Siksha Parishad, said, "Projects prepared from thermocol or plastic is injurious to our health. They don't decompose easily, polluting the soil and atmosphere for years."
Basic Siksha Adhikaris of all districts have been directed to strictly implement the ban in schools. D C Sharma, a teacher in Lucknow, said, "Majority of the students are not aware that thermocol is also a plastic and is a harmful substance... So before implementing the ban, children should be taught about its harmful. This is a positive step taken by the parishad for the welfare of the students and society and country."
