AHMEDABAD: In a major action taken against unauthorized agents and touts at
Regional Transport Office (RTO) a total of 45 persons were detained from the
RTO office at Subhash Bridge on Friday by RTO officials. The ‘agents’ were later handed over to Ranip police for further probe. Usually, agents and touts do work ranging from issuance of new licences to driving tests and changes in RC book details
S P Muniya, RTO Ahmedabad, said that a state-wide circular was issued by the state transport department not to tolerate the illegal activities of unauthorized agents on RTO premises. “The work was carried out on Friday without any person getting a whiff of the planned action. As the agents got settled for work at various parts of the office, the shutters were lowered at the main entrance and all persons were checked to explain why they were on the premises,” he said.
The RTO staff then identified 45 persons who were working on behalf of their clients. RTO officials then called upon Ranip police who later took the accused into custody. Muniya said that the persons were booked for trespassing. “Action will continue against middlemen of any kind. The only persons allowed except the concerned persons would have to be company representatives or those identified for official work. Citizens can also approach RTO officials for any complaint,” said an official.
Sources however said that the importance of agents is a stark reality at the RTO. “Due to complex rules, the applicant has no option but to take someone’s help. After this action, we would also expect the RTO officials to be a bit more helpful,” said an applicant on condition of anonymity.
