TRICHY: More than 50 houses encroaching upon a public works department (PWD) canal in Thalavaai Palayam, Karur district were razed on Friday by the authorities after it obtained a go-ahead from Madurai high court.Encroached for over years together, the canal was retrieved by PWD with the help of earth movers by bringing down houses which included concrete structures.
Mahendran from Thalavaai Palayam had moved Madurai high court in 2012 seeking directions to the PWD to carry eviction to retrieve the canal.
While the court delivered verdict directing PWD to carry out eviction, the encroachers had again moved the high court seeking stay on eviction. But court refused to stay eviction proceedings.
While several notices were served to the encroachers in the past asking them to vacate the houses, they stay put in the place.
On Friday, a team of PWD officials razed down the houses using earth movers.
While the inhabitants resisted the move but they were evacuated with the help of police after allowing them to take away their belongings.
