KOLKATA: The Kolkata
Metro Rail Corporation (
KMRC) on Thursday announced it would ‘immediately’ release Rs 5 lakh each, not only to families that have lost property or means of income, but also those who were evacuated al of a sudden.
“The board of directors at KMRC have decided to immediately release Rs 5 lakh to every affected family evacuated in a sudden or unplanned manner,” a KMRC statement said. The families have been shifted to hotels and the expenses will be borne by KMRC, which added that it would reconstruct or repair the damaged buildings. “If the hotel stay of the residents is prolonged, they will be provided with flats on rent,” it said.
Sources indicated that officials have started scouting for apartment blocks which can be let out for at least a year. However, mayor Firhad Hakim did not provide any timeline for the repairs and demolition of buildings. “There are incidents of new siltation and the land is not stable. Initially, KMRC said the siltation will be arrested in 48 hours, but now they are telling us they can’t give us a time frame for that,” Hakim said.
KMRC directors met with Firhad Hakim, chief secretary Moloy De and other state officials. According to Hakim, the list of displaced families will be prepared by the local police station and councillors, and KMRC will start releasing the cheques within the next twothree days.
A preliminary headcount by the state and KMRC authorities put the total number of people displaced at 500 and number of families evacuated at 76. This puts the quantum of interim relief at Rs 3.8 crore. However, sources said, they will refrain from commenting on the final numbers till a detailed study is carried out.
