PUNE: A police team on night patrol duty foiled an attempt to steal cash from an ICICI Bank ATM on Bhau Patil Road in the early hours of Thursday.
Two men, using a sharp implement, broke the ATM's screen and forced open its cash dispenser's door, while their accomplice stood outside on the lookout. But before they got their hands on the cash, the police arrived on regular rounds.
"The man on the lookout panicked on seeing the patrol vehicle and signalled to his associates to flee. The three men abandoned the attempt and sped away on their motorcycle," sub-inspector Amol Bhosale of the Khadki police station said.
The incident happened between 1.43am and 1.53am, Bhosale said.
The Khadki police registered complaint suo moto, as the bank and its contractor responsible for refilling cash failed to lodge an FIR, Bhosale said.
"We informed ICICI Bank after it opened for business, as well as its contractor, and asked them to lodge a complaint. But they did not respond to our request. We lodged an FIR under sections 380 (theft), 511 (attempt), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code," Bhosale said.

"We will issue a statement on the matter in due course," an ICICI spokesperson told TOI.
Police said the machine was badly damaged. "The thieves disconnected the two CCTV cameras and sprayed white paint on the lens. The cameras have captured images of the two suspects, but their faces are not visible. Our investigation showed that the thieves came from Dapodi and fled in the same direction," Bhosale said.
