JAIPUR: An alert on Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has been sounded in western Rajasthan as border areas in Pakistan and in Gujarat have reported Congo fever cases in increased numbers.
Even the Centre is keeping an eye on the fever. The Centre has sent a two-member team of National Centre for Disease Control, which reached Jodhpur on Thursday to assess the situation. The border districts such as Jaisalmer are also on alert. “We have issued directions to all our officials to remain alert on CCHF. Doctors have been told to remain alert if a patient with CCHF-like symptoms comes to them for treatment,” said Dr BK Barupal, chief medical health officer, Jaisalmer.

CCHF is a disease caused by a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus) of the Bunyaviridae family. A 32-year-old person, resident of Molana Azad Nagar, was suffering from CCHF-like symptoms went for treatment to a registered medical practitioner on August 14. He did not get relief and went to government-run MDM Hospital. Following that, he rushed to Ahmedabad for further treatment, where the doctors took his sample and sent it to National Institute of Virology in Pune, where he tested positive for CCHF.
Claiming that the situation is under control, the health department sent a team headed by Dr Praveen Aswal, nodal officer, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) to Jodhpur, which has returned to Jaipur. “The team conducted the survey and found two more persons with symptoms of CCHF from the same family of the 32-year-old person. They have also been sent to Ahmedabad for treatment,” said Dr VK Mathur, director (health), health department.
