PUNE: As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall is likely to continue in central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa and Vidarbha till September 9. Maharashtra has reported 25 per cent excess rainfall since June 1 to September 5 this year.

The southwest monsoon has been vigorous over Punjab, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and active over Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, coastal Andhra Pradesh and south interior Karnataka.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather at IMD Pune said that the monsoon in the State has been vigorous as of Thursday. It will bring good rains in the coming days.

“Both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal sides of the monsoon are active. The monsoon trough is also tilting southwards and an offshore trough is present from south Gujarat up to north Kerala. There is also a shear zone present. All these factors have resulted in vigorous monsoon conditions over the State. Moreover, strong westerlies will bring moisture and packed isobars off Maharashtra and Goa shore,” said Kashyapi.

He said that till September 9, widespread rainfall is predicted over Konkan and Goa.

“Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over Raigad and Ratnagiri on September 6. Heavy rainfall will continue in Ratnagiri till September 9. For central Maharashtra, ghat areas near Nashik, Satara and Kolhapur will receive extremely heavy rainfall till September 9. Extreme heavy rainfall warning is for these ghat areas only. The cities may receive light to moderate rains,” added Kashyapi.

For Marathwada, Kashyapi added that on September 6 and September 7, there will be fairly widespread rainfall. However, on September 8 and September 9, there will be scattered rains in the region.
