HYDERABAD: As the festive fervour of Lord Ganesha’s birthday continues to grip the city, Ganesha pandals exhibiting innovative themes are drawing devotees to the city from across the country. Vibrant colours and out-of the-box themes depicting Lord Ganesha in different avatars are the show stealers at various pandals.
At the Khairatabad Ganesha pandal, several devotees can be seen clicking photos of the tallest Ganesha and making video calls to their family members in other parts of the country so that they can show them the Ganesha. "I planned to come here with my wife and son, but due to an emergency, they could not come with me. This is quite a grand idol so I thought of showing them the idol live," said Karunes M, 35, from Kerala.

With idol-makers getting more creative and the idols getting bigger, the cost of conducting the festival has increased this year, and so has the number of devotees from all over the country. "I just reached Hyderabad from Puri with my family and ensured that we have our darshan of Khairatabad Ganesha before taking some rest. My daughter was very excited to see the 61 feet Ganesha," said Neelima Panigrahi from Odisha.

Meanwhile, hawkers selling traditional items and accessories are doing brisk business. A large number of women dressed in traditional Rajasthani ghagra-choli selling mehendi and an array of traditional earrings and other ornaments have ensured a carnival-like atmosphere at Ganesha pandals across the city.
“We keep travelling throughout the year, after selling our items in Hyderabad, we return to Jodhpur and then travel to Bengal for Durga Puja,” said Chhavi, 26, who had set up a bangle stall on Tuesday and plans to stay in the city for the next 10 days. “We see good sales of our products during this festive season but we have to negotiate smartly with the customers, otherwise, we can end up suffering losses,” she added.
