Two dead and a child fighting for life after smash in state's north

Two people are dead and a child is fighting for life after a two-car crash in the state's north-east on Friday afternoon.

Police believe the driver of a north-bound Commodore crossed to the wrong side of the Goulburn Valley Highway at Wunghnu, about 30km north of Shepparton, and hit a car travelling in the opposite direction at 2.45pm.

Two passengers in the Commodore died at the scene, while a third passenger, identified by police as young child, was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The male driver was taken to hospital by road ambulance.

The female driver of the other car was also injured and taken to hospital.

The incident takes Victoria's road toll to 194 compared to 136 at the same time last year.
