HYDERABAD: Delivering a rude shock on Teachers' Day to those who administer teachers, Justice P Naveen Rao of the Telangana high court on Thursday sentenced district education officers (DEOs) of four districts in the state to two-month jail term in a contempt case.
DEOs Venkateswarlu (Karimnagar), Narayan Reddy (Warangal), Madan Mohan (Khammam) and Sarojini Devi (Nalgonda), who were present in the court as per earlier direction of the court, were handed out the punishment for failing to implement a court order in respect of the 1998 teachers' recruitment that went up to the Supreme Court.
The apex court had earlier given guidelines in the matter. The HC, too, directed authorities to prepare the select list in tune with the SC guidelines and recruit teachers. A tussle erupted when the state reduced cut-off limit to enable more candidates gain eligibility to compete. Some candidates questioned this benevolence when the recruitment process was midway. The matter made several litigation rounds up to the apex court.

The AP Administrative Tribunal too gave certain directions. None of them were implemented.
As a last opportunity, Justice Naveen Rao last month gave four weeks to officials to prepare the list and give teacher jobs to the eligible. When that was not done, the judge handed out jail term to the DEOs. He imposed a penalty of 2,000 each. However, the sentence was suspended for four weeks to allow contemnors to avail legal remedies.
