Mumbai: Wet Wednesday claims four lives, one missing

Heavy downpour for six hours paralysed the city on Wednesday
MUMBAI: Four people, including two BMC labourers, died on Wednesday and one went missing in a river. BMC and police officers said that two of the persons died due to heart attack in a flooded area.
The first death was of Mohammed Shaikh (24), a resident of Bandra (east). He was walking towards Kurla along with two friends when, around 3.45pm, he suddenly removed his shirt and jumped into an overflowing Mithi river. Around 4.30pm, the BKC police received a call from the control room about the incident. "Shaikh's mother, citing a superstitious reason, said he had started acting in a strange manner about 15 days ago," said a police officer. Shaikh's body was fished out soon after the police and rescuers reached the site.
One of Shaikh's friends, who was with him at the time of the incident, told the police, "We thought Shaikh knew swimming, but then we saw him drowning. Arshad (the second friend) and I jumped into the water, but we were unable to save Shaikh," said Khan, the first friend.
In another incident, near Kalanagar, four boys jumped into an overflowing Vakola river to swim. Three came out, while one is still missing. Rescuers from the fire brigade and the navy searched for the missing youth till Thursday evening, in vain. Finally, they informed the local police and called off the search operation.

In the third incident, two BMC workers died while manning a flooded area in Goregaon on Wednesday evening. Vijayendra Bagdi (36) and Jagdish Parmar (54) were deployed to remove garbage blocking water-flow at different points. They were found unconscious by others on the waterlogged road and taken to different hospitals, where they were declared dead on arrival. BMC officials said one of them died due to heart attack. BMC had deplored 32,200 workers and officials across the city on Wednesday as a precautionary measure.
In the fourth incident, as train services stopped because of heavy rain and roads got flooded, a Thane resident, Ashok Mayekar (69), was found unconscious in a street near Hindmata at Dadar around midnight. Passersby rushed him to hospital, where he was declared dead. Bhoiwada police registered an accidental death report and denied foul play. The police said Mayekar had come to meet a relative at Chinchpokli. It is believed that he was on his way to his relative's place at the time of his death.
