PUNE: The Shivajinagar police have arrested a 30-year-old woman, who kicked and punched two woman police constables at Dnyaneshwar Paduka junction during the wee hours of Wednesday.
A medical report by the Sassoon General Hospital confirmed the police's suspicion that the accused was in an inebriated condition when she created the ruckus.
After receiving a call from the police control room, a team went to check on the situation when the accused assaulted the two women constables. Sub-inspector Diksha Zadte of Shivajinagar police station told TOI, "The woman has completed an engineering course. She has also done an interior designing course from a famous institute in the city. The woman hails from Ahmednagar but lives in a rented apartment at Katraj."
Zadte added that the woman was employed with a prominent builder and was looking after the interior decoration work at a site in Bhugaon. She lost her job a few days ago and was in depression. "Late on Tuesday night, the woman consumed alcohol at a friend's birthday party in Kothrud. One of her friends dropped her to Deccan Bus Stand from where she was to catch a bus to Katraj."
"She was so inebriated that she lost her way and she walked towards Dnyaneshwar Paduka junction instead of heading to Katraj. After reaching Dnyaneshwar Paduka junction, she fell down on the footpath. A group of youngsters went to see what has happened to her. They tried to help the woman when she screamed and hurled abuses at them. The woman then started screaming, she even kicked and punched a few of the bystanders. One of the youngsters then contacted police control room and informed them about the incident," Zadte said.
The sub-inspector said that the police team, comprising of two women constables, reached the spot in a van and picked up the woman. However, the woman refused to sit in the van and started abusing the women police constable. Despite the commotion, the women constables accompanied the woman to the police station. However, the women kicked and punched the women constables at the police station.
Zadte said the woman was later taken to the Sassoon General Hospital for a medical check-up. The medical report states that she was heavily inebriated.
The number of attacks on the policemen and women deployed in the city seems to have risen drastically. Earlier this week, on Monday, a man was arrested on charges of abusing and attacking police constable Rohit Karne over a dispute at Krishnanagar slum in Mohammadwadi.
The incident took place after Karne and another beat marshal from the Undri police station rushed to the slum upon receiving a call about a man who was allegedly beating up an elderly woman and her daughters. When the constables asked the accused to report to the police station regarding the case, the man refused to do so. Then he abused and attacked Karne.
