NEW DELHI: This year, the
Delhi University Students’ Union polls have ushered in a change by increasing the representation of women to over 30%. In fact, three of the four candidates contesting for the president’s post are women. Students from 52 colleges and departments will vote on September 12 to elect the
DUSU panel.
After 12 years, National Students Union of India (NSUI), the students’ wing of Congress, has fielded a third year student, Chetna Tyagi, for the president’s post. They had last fielded Amrita Bahri in 2007. The last woman DUSU president was Nupur Sharma from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 2008. In 2011, ABVP had fielded Neha Singh, but she lost to NSUI candidate Ajay Chikara.
The Left-leaning All India Students Association (AISA) has fielded Damini Kain, a political science MA student for the president’s post. The third woman candidate is Roshni of All India Democratic Students Organisation.
NSUI said they are fielding more women to fight “patriarchy” and ensure “equality”. “I am contesting this election to challenge sexism in the university. If elected, I will fight to ensure that women have to follow the same rules as men in the hostels,” said Tyagi.
ABVP has fielded Akshit Dahiya, a first-year master’s student at Faculty of Law and a national-level bodybuilder, for the president’s position.
Out of the 16 candidates for the four DUSU central posts, five are women. In 2018, five out of 23 candidates were women. In 2017, there were five women candidates out of 24.
While ABVP has fielded Shivangi Kharwal, an MA student from the department of Buddhist Studies, for the joint secretary position, AISA has nominated Chetna, a first-year student of Miranda House, for the same post. She is the youngest candidate in the fray and the first woman from her village in Rajasthan who has come to Delhi for graduate studies.
While Students Federation of India candidates couldn’t file their nominations this year, Indian National Students Organisation, the students’ wing of Jannayak Janta Party, and Chhatra Yuva Sangarsh Samiti, the students’ wing of AAP, are not contesting the polls. All India Students Federation has fielded one candidate for the vice-president’s post.
