The Central government’s Jal Shakthi Abhiyan movement plans to use various government departments to take up and energise water-related works to ensure that the water table in the district increases, Abhiyan chief nodal officer PK Abdul Karim said here on Wednesday.

He said 16 JSA officials were participating in water-related activities in the district. Projects proposed include taking up kudimaramathu works in 220 small lakes and 481 ponds at an estimated cost of Rs.15.81 crore.
Similarly, another 5000 works costing around Rs 200 crore are to be completed under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee scheme, he said.
The PWD’s WRO (Water Resources Organisation) will take up activities on 49 irrigation tanks and four supply channels at a cost of Rs 12 crore while the agricultural engineering department will develop 100 farm ponds at a cost of Rs 81 lakh.
TWAD will take up another 18 works at an estimated cost of Rs.2.07 crore while the agriculture and horticulture departments plan to plant 9 lakh palmyra seeds and 1.50 lakh seeds of other species, Karim added.
Interacting with the media in the presence of DRDA (District Rural Development Agency) project director P Periasamy, he said all local bodies, revenue, TWAD, agriculture, horticulture, rural development, Women’s Development Corporation, PWD, highways, forest, school education, higher education, Kissan Vikas Kendra and Nehru Yuva Kendra have been made part of the project to ensure awareness creation among the public as the water table in 38 of the 53 firkas in the district was very low.
