Thiruchirapalli:
After a tip off that arrack sachets were widely made available across Thanajvur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, the Kumbakonam Taluk police established a probe across Kumbakonam. The preliminary investigations by the police revealed that arrack was brewed at a house at Udayanagar in Kumbakonam. After zeroing down, the police questioned the neighbours of the house but the neighbours rubbished the information and informed that it was a juice factory. However, as the answers failed to convince the officials, they continued to keep an eye on the house.
On Tuesday proving the suspicion right, a few persons loaded bags of large quantities of ‘Pondi juice’ into two and four wheelers. Subsequently, a police team rushed to the house in the late hours and found out that four persons including two women were filling the sachets with ‘Pondi juice’ that was brewed in the factory. The police then scrutinized the samples of ‘Pondi juice’ and found that the liquid was arrack.
Following the revelation, the police arrested all the four persons who were identified as Raj (40), Rafeek (37) Santha (40) and Selvi (40), all from Mayiladuthurai. During the interrogation, police found that the modus operandi of the four members was to purchase spirit from Puducherry and fill it into 150 ml and 200 ml sachets that bears the name ‘Pondi juice’.
The accused said that they were selling the arrack in the market through agents appointed in key areas of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts for the past six months.
The police also seized 40 barrels of spurious spirit, 2,000 sachets of arrack (around 750 litres), packing machine, cartons, two cars and two bikes. Subsequently, the case has been transferred to the Prohibition and Enforcement Wing police who have registered a case and are investigating.
