The panchayat union primary school near Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district on Wednesday wore a deserted look following parents of the students refusing to have them sent for classes in the wake of their complaint of no legal action having being initiated on the institution’s headmistress accused of assaulting a pupil a few months ago.

Thiruchirapalli:
According to sources, the headmistress of Mela Thirupanthuruthi village panchayat union primary school, Sundari, on June 25 this year kicked Class V student Ajijah. Her grandfather Liyagat Ali then lodged a complaint against Sundari with the panchayat union assistant commissioner Saminathan and the Nadukaviri police station. Though Sundari went on leave after the incident, she returned to duty in August upon which parents of the school’s students then staged a protest demanding action against her. However, no action had been initiated against her so far, and the parents felt that the Education department had been acting in Sundari’s favour, sources said.
Subsequently, on Wednesday, parents refused to send their children to the school until action was initiated against the headmistress. As the students did not turn up, the school wore a deserted look.
There are as many as 65 students, three teachers and the headmistress, besides a mid-day meal organiser and an assistant working in the school.
Parents claimed that they had sent petitions against the school headmistress to the Education department to initiate legal action. However, the department failed to take action, they claimed. “We will never send our children until legal action has been initiated against the headmistress,” they said.
