Angry Norwegian Cruise Line passengers said they had to sit in buses for hours without food and water after Hurricane Dorian forced their ship to change its final destination

Passengers on Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Breakaway ship told the Miami-based CBS affiliate CBS4 News that they were left on charter buses without food or water for hours after Hurricane Dorian forced their the ship to reroute from Miami to New Orleans. The cruise was originally scheduled to end on September 1, but Norwegian pushed that back to September 3.

After the ship docked, the passengers were reportedly confined to a cargo terminal with little communication from Norwegian about how they would get home.

"Everyone was starving. No one knows what's been going on. Basically Norwegian Breakaway just dumped us here and said, 'See you later,'" one passenger told CBS4 News.

Some passengers "begged" to get off the buses, according to CBS4 News' report, though they were later given sandwiches by Norwegian employees.

A charter plane reportedly took the passengers back to Miami hours after they were originally supposed to land there.

Norwegian Cruise Line did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Norwegian and other cruise lines have changed the itineraries for a number of ships to avoid Hurricane Dorian. Some, like the Norwegian Breakaway, remained at sea after their trips were originally scheduled to end.

Hurricane Dorian has killed at least 20 people in the Bahamas. The Category 3 storm was making its way up the southeastern US coast toward the Carolinas, as of Thursday morning.
