Frightening moment an elderly woman in her EIGHTIES brandishes a massive kitchen knife in the streets of Sydney - sending two schools into lockdown as she's pepper-sprayed by police

An elderly woman believed to be suffering dementia waved a massive kitchen knife at police officers sending nearby schools into lockdown.

The 84-year-old woman confronted the two officers along Church Street in Canterbury, Sydney's south-west, on Thursday afternoon. 

Shocking footage showed the officers slowly backing away as the woman approached them, 7 News reported.

Both officers plead with the woman to drop the 15cm long knife as she waves the weapon wildly in the air.

An officer attempts to subdue the woman with capsicum spray though she continues to charge.

She attempts to shield her eyes with her jacket several times as she swings the knife around. 

Another officer discharges a taser at the woman though misses.

Eventually she was arrested and emergency services transported her to hospital to be assessed.

Canterbury Boys and Girls High Schools were placed into lockdown during the confrontation.
