Virgin Australia boss has announced they are one step closer to choosing which routes to cull after announcing they would cut 750 jobs.

The country's second-largest airline announced a huge loss of $349.1million in the past financial year and have announced plans to save money.

The company has now lost money for seven years in a row, with total losses at $1.9billion. 

CEO Paul Scurrah said cutting 750 jobs will help the airline save $75million in costs by the end of the next fiscal year.

He said every flight route is under review, while not ruling out getting rid of some routes entirely.  

'You will see us pull out of some routes … some entirely. I'm not going to sugar-coat that. We will be making some of those decisions,' he told news.com.au

International cities will also see some cuts due to their source of being less profitable. 

Some of the Pacific Islands and Hong Kong flights will be looked at closely.

Mr Scurrah blamed weak demand, higher fuel costs and a weaker currency for the company's losses.

Mr Scurrah said millions of dollars have been used to pay for the additional fuel costs which have burdened the airline.

Despite the losses, he vows that it would still be the same airline Australians love to fly with. 

'No matter what happens, we will still see the discounted tickets in the market today. We will just balance that mix to be getting the higher yielding front-end of the plane filled so we can make money,' he told the publication.

'Virgin as a brand is one of the strongest you'd want to work with. It allows us to compete head-to-head with Qantas in the markets and routes that we do compete.
