'He shouldn't come out until he tells us what happened': mum says Guider still dangerous

Just two minutes before Michael Guider walked free from prison, Tess Knight was calling my phone. Would she be agonising, angry or bitter? Well, probably all three but more than that she was amazingly composed.

Here was the mother of nine-year-old Samantha speaking as the killer of her daughter was about to shuffle out of the main gate of Long Bay.

"I am concerned that he is still dangerous," were her first words.

Told that one person who knew Guider - Denise Hofman - said he shouldn't have been freed until he revealed where Samantha was, she replied: "I would take it a step further.

"I would say he shouldn't come out until he tells us what happened to Samantha. There is no Samantha to find any more. He could provide the place where he left her. By telling us what happened he could demonstrate that he has an understanding of what he did.

"That is how he could demonstrate that he has changed. At no point has he demonstrated that he has changed. Even the psychiatrists and psychologists say that he continues to be a risk.

"Anyone who knows him professionally or personally says he continues to be a risk."

Would she watch the television pictures tonight or would it be too difficult?

"I will have a look, " she said. "I want to know what he looks like. I do need to know what he looks like."

Did she think Guider would ever reveal what happened? "I am just guessing but I am thinking probably not. I don't know him, I am observing him from afar. The police have tried as hard as they can over the years to get some information and he consistently says no. He hasn't demonstrated he has changed.

"He holds that little bit of information to himself like a little treasure."
