LUDHIANA: The commuters passing through Basti Jodhewal Chowk were taken to a surprise when a group of priests was performing some Yagya under the flyover on Thursday. Some only bowed their head in respect while some were seen questioning other people standing there about the same. When they were told that yagya was being performed for the early completion of flyover work they also started describing the problems which they face almost daily while passing from there. However it also added to the traffic problem at the road when people stared at what was happening there halting their cars and two-wheelers.
An activist Kumar Gaurav had organised the same for waking up the authorities from slumber and souls of those persons should rest in peace who died in accidents near this chowk. He claimed that from almost 10 years people are waiting for completion of these flyovers and despite so many missing deadlines the authorities are silent. He said there is high time now when work should be taken up at fast pace and complete it for the sake of public safety as well. “This yagya was performed to offer prayers to God that pending flyovers should be completed.
A resident of Gaunsgarh village Sangeeta Sharma who does job in Sunder Nagar shared, “I come from my village to Sunder Nagar daily and to reach my office I have to cross this chowk as well. There is fast moving traffic as it is national highway and to cross road becomes a herculean task.” She said flyover should be completed as soon as possible so that at least heavy traffic should move from over the flyover and there will be some relief for the public.
Another resident of Tajpur Road Jatinder Singh claimed that many accidents take place near construction site because of the chaos all around but even then work is not completed at the said date. He said long queues of vehicles could be seen at both sides of the road during the day and people get stuck for a long time.

Meanwhile the MLA Sanjay Talwar claimed, “The flyover work was moving at slow pace because of monsoon season, traffic problem and shifting of cables from the road and these issues are almost redressed and it is hopeful that one side of the flyover will be opened shortly.” He said by performing such things flyover cannot be completed and all this was done just to grab media attention.
Notably, for completion of Basti Jodhewal, Sherpur Chowk and cancer hospital chowk flyovers (which are part of six laning project from Panipat to Amritsar pending for 10 years) the congress MP Ravneet Bittu, cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, MLAs Sanjay Talwar, Kuldeep Vaid, Surinder Dawar, Mayor Balkar Sandhu and other congress leaders had staged protest at toll plaza on March 8 and 9. The protest got over when national highway authority of India and private company kept deadline for Basti Jodhewal chowk to June end and for rest two January 2020. But till date they could not complete the flyover in Basti Jodhewal Chowk.
