AHMEDABAD: A 10-year-old girl was molested by a 29-year-old man when she went inside the trial room of a garment shop in Vejalpur area of the city on Tuesday evening.
The accused has been identified as Umesh Prajapati, a resident of Vejalpur, who had worked at the garments shop for about a year.
The incident occurred at Parshwanath Readymade Store in Baliyadev Complex at Makarba crossroads in Vejalpur when the victim had gone to the shop with her mother.
“Her mother had taken the girl to buy garments for her. She liked a dress and went to the trial room to try it on. After a while, her mother heard her screaming and when she went to her, she told her mother that she had been molested by a man,” said an official of Vejalpur police station where the case was registered.
The official said that the trial room had two doors, which Prajapati knew. When he saw the girl going inside to change her clothes, he went in, opened the other door and entered inside the trial room.
He allegedly tried to press the girl’s mouth shut and molested her. But the girl, somehow, managed to escape.
The accused was caught by people there who handed him over to the police.

Inspector L D Odedara of Vejalpur police said that they have booked Prajapati for molestation and under the POCSO (Protection of Children against Sexual Offences) Act and began an investigation.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
