In the wake of unruly celebrations leading to accidents

The Higher Education department has taken a stern view of unruly Onam celebrations organised by colleges.

In the wake of the disorderly celebration by students of Iqbal College, Peringamala, that left two people injured, Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel has cautioned colleges against violating the guidelines issued for organising such events.

Dr. Jaleel told media persons that there had been a spate of complaints regarding such incidents.

The Principals of colleges had been issued strict directions to adhere to the guidelines. Stringent action would be adopted against erring institutions, he said.

At Iqbal College

The Onam celebrations at Iqbal College on Tuesday witnessed numerous students obstructing traffic along the 6-km stretch from the college to Palode for several hours.

Bike stunts and rallies were taken out in over 100 vehicles. The celebration came to an abrupt halt when a jeep driven by a student knocked down a motorcycle, leaving a woman and her son injured.

The Palode police registered a case against 100 students.

College principal U. Abdul Khalam said that the incident had taken place outside the campus after the conclusion of the Onam celebrations organised separately by various departments of the institution. Nevertheless, the college had shared the footage of the incident from a CCTV camera installed at the main entrance. Disciplinary action would be taken against those found responsible for the incident, he said.
