HUBBALLI: In an act that exemplifies the strong
communal harmony and bondage prevailing in the city,
villagers of Yakkundi in Vijayapura district inaugurated the
Lalsab Ali Fira Mosque with the prayer of
Goddess Lakshmi and Rajabakshi on Wednesday.
Alladin Jamadar, member, Lalsab Devara Committee, said that the earlier mosque building was in a pathetic condition and so villagers decided to construct it at the same site. "We celebrate Muharram from Thursday and material required for pooja like oil, jaggery, sandal will come from the houses of different community people. We are not doing anything new but are continuing the legacy of our elders and ancestors” he added.
Babugouda Patil, a farmer, said that estimated budget for
construction of the mosque is Rs nine lakh. “Our MLA M B Patil donated Rs two lakh, while ZP member Umesh Kolkur offered Rs 1.40 lakh. For the remaining cost, villagers donated from Rs 1,000 to 50,000 as per their financial capacity. There was no politics in it. Even BJP workers also contributed to it,” he said proudly.
Kutubuddin Jamadar, a youth, said that even Lalsab Devaru Committee involves six Hindu members and five Muslim members. “As this is the Muharram Mosque, we keep three gods - Lalsab (Huseni in Quorran), Hiri Devaru (Haseni) and Mudalagi Devaru. Two Muslims and one Hindu person hold these Gods during Muharram celebration, in which all communities, including Dalits, take part every year. And all Muslims celebrate all Hindu festivals like Deepavali without any discrimination” he affirmed.
The trio said that the mosque was formally inaugurated on September 1 but the grand inaugural ceremony was held on Wednesday.
Former Home Minister and Vijayapura sitting MLA M B Patil, who witnessed the event, said that religious harmony is essential for preserving India's pluralism. “It’s a matter of pride that villagers of Yakkundi, in my constituency, have inaugurated the newly built Masjid by performing Lakshmi Pooja. I wish this spirit is spread across the country” he added.
