A research scholar of AU renounced his degree prior to convocation

ALLAHABAD: As authorities of Allahabad University (AU) are busy making last minute preparations for holing convocation on September 5, a former PhD scholar of the department of English has refused to accept the degree or participate in the ceremony.
Dhurva Harsh, who is into making films and documentary and has been awarded for the same on national and international levels, said he is renouncing the degree because chief guest i.e. Kailash Satyarthi will award degrees selectively due to lack of time.
The renowned documentary and short film maker has also questioned the decision of AU of awarding honorary degree to UP DGP OP Singh, an "officer who never supported students of AU"
"I got to know about my name being in the list of those who would be awarded their degree in the convocation through my friends and was on top of the world with the thought of attending the function but then I was told the chief guest, Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi would award degree only to medal holder owing to scarcity of time, I was shocked", said Dhurva, while talking to TOI over phone from Mumbai. A PhD degree is the foremost achievement that we as research scholar gets and that too would not be given by the chief guest is so disheartening, he added.
In his letter to the AU VC, Prof R L Hangloo, which he posted on his face book page, Dhruva said, "Satyarthi ji will honour only those who topped their classes and the DGP of Uttar Pradesh, an alumnus who never had that much association with the University, never backed students in the matter of hostel wash-outs and their tough times, would be conferred with the honorary doctorate by the VC, who does possibly everything for his own benefactors and never thought about the welfare of students and the quality of education on the campus".
"Lot of people think that I was victimized by the institution because of which I have taken this step but what I decided was only because of the fact that those in the helms of affair think of only their own interest because of which 'my institution' do not feature even in the top 200 institutions of the country today", said the PhD holder whose films like 'honorable mention', 'do I exist', 'Hershit' etc have earned acclaims, both nationally and internationally.
This former student of AU has also blamed the present VC responsible for all the downfalls AU is facing right now.
"I personally renounce the honour which I don't know whether I deserve or not with no regrets. And furthermore, I will not mention that I've done D.Phil in English from the University of Allahabad", he writes.
Commenting on the issue, AU PRO, Chitranjan Kumar said, "The research scholar may not be coming for his personal reasons or commitments, he has registered himself and I had invited him, now it is his prerogative whether to come or not".
Meanwhile, several of the student leaders and student wing of political parties have praised Dhruva for his decision.
