Teachers' Day is celebrated across the country in the memory of Dr
S Radhakrishna, a brilliant teacher and mentor, who was born on September 5, 1888. His contributions to the field of education are exemplary. In 1962, the tradition to celebrate Teachers' Day began to honour Radhakrishnan and the teaching community in general.
PM Modi highlighted the shift that was taking place in the education sector, where there was a move away from the "conventional approach of merely focusing on outlays" with priority now being given to "outcomes".
The Prime Minister also used the occastion as an opportunity to focus on the need to curb single-use plastic.
"As you are aware, India has taken up a mass movement to eliminate single use plastic," he said, adding "I seek the active support and participation of the teaching community in this movement. If teachers explain to the students the harm caused to our environment by single-use plastic and advise them to shun it, students will feel motivated to become a part of the cause."
