Bathinda: Cops bust gang that trick men into marrying ‘loot & scoot’ women, 5 held

BATHINDA: The police here have busted a gang, by arresting five, including four women, who allegedly conned men by arranging wedding with ‘loot and scoot’ women. The gang members, operating from a rented house in Bathinda, were getting men married to women who, after a few days, fled with cash and gold.
It is said the gang members sent proposals for marriage by posing as relatives of the women. The women are usually in their late 20s. According to the police, the gang members have duped 10 men such fake marriages, but they are yet to get the details. On Wednesday, police arrested five members of the gang, including four women, from Bhai Mati Dass Nagar in Bathinda.
The gang targeted areas in Punjab and some parts adjoining Bathinda in Haryana and Rajasthan. The arrested have been identified as Jagsir Singh of Rampura, Amarjit Kaur, Kulwinder Kaur, Chhinder Kaur of Bathinda and Mohinder Kaur of Rampura. Some members of the gang are suspected to be still at large.

During initial investigations, Kulwinder revealed that she got married to five men at different times and she decamped with valuables a few days after each wedding, police said.
Punjab bureau of investigations superintendent of police (SP) Gurbinder Singh Sangha said, “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a search at a house in Bhai Mati Dass Nagar on Wednesday. We arrested five persons, including four women, who are accused of having duped men. We are investigating the matter. A case under sections 494 (marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife), 495 (concealment of former marriage from person with whom subsequent marriage is contracted), 380(theft in dwelling house), 420 (cheating and dishonesty) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC has been registered against the accused.”
