Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol on Wednesday said ₹58 crore would be released, in addition to the package announced to Kodagu district, by the Department of Public Works towards carrying out restoration works.

Speaking after inspecting the roads damaged in the recent rain and floods in the district, Mr. Karjol said the government had announced a ₹536-crore package for flood relief and rehabilitation works.

He said Madikeri–Sampaje Road, Konanur–Makutta Road and Virajpet–Kodlipet Road and other State and national highways passing through the district were damaged in the rain. Many bridges had also been destroyed in floods. The government was committed to rebuilding the bridges and restoring the roads, he said after inspecting roads at Katakeri and 2nd Monnageri. Mr. Karjol said ₹1,000 crore was needed to restore damaged bridges across the State.

MLA K.G. Bopaiah said permanent rebuilding steps were necessary as many roads and bridges had been destroyed in the rain. MLA Appachu Ranjan said many bridges were at risk of collapse and needed immediate repair. More funds from the Public Works Department were needed for Kodagu, he said.
