A gullible college student, who lost his new motorbike to a person who sought a lift, received his vehicle back when the thief was arrested on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, when Harish Kumar was crossing Green circle near the new bus stand, he was flagged down by a person, identified as Mehboob Basha, and requested a lift to Arcot town. Harish Kumar obliged and soon the two were on their way. While travelling, Basha made enquiries about the new vehicle and Harish Kumar answered all his questions.
When they neared Arcot, Basha requested him to stop near the bus stand for a tea. When Harish was having his tea, Basha suddenly drove off on the new vehicle shocking Harish Kumar. The latter complained to the Arcot town police who registered a case.
While Mehboob Basha was speeding on the Chennai–Bengaluru national highway, he knocked down one Perisasamy (55), a local from Thenkadapanthangal village, killing him on the spot. Scared by the incident, Basha dropped the bike and fled the scene on foot.
The police later recovered the bike and handed it over to Harish Kumar and arrested Mehboob Basha from his house in Arcot.
Police said Harish Kumar (20), son of Ravi Kumar of Chitheri, was given a new two-wheeler to attend classes in the engineering college near Arcot where he was studying.
