DGP sounds alert to prevent lynching in Jharkhand

KN Chaubey
RANCHI: In the aftermath of the rise in instances of mob-violence in name of child-lifting in Jharkhand in the recent past, director general of police (DGP) K N Chaubey instructed the on-field police officers to take swift action upon receiving information regarding such incidents.
On Tuesday, six persons, accused of being child lifters, narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob under Jainagar block of Koderma district .
Speaking to TOI, Chaubey said, "There are cases of violence in connection with child lifting not only in Jharkhand but also in other parts of the country. In many cases, mobs have resorted to violence over insubstantial reasons."
He added, "We got to know of a case in the state where a woman was beaten up in a bank when she was trying to console the child of another customer, who was crying."
"I have sounded an alert to all police officers in this regard," the DGP added.
He said the police officers have been asked to register cases and arrest as many accused persons as possible.
Chaubey added that police headquarters have already issued standard operating procedures for such cases and the order would be reiterated again.
The DGP said even though police are the first respondent in such incidents, the problem needs a long-term and comprehensive solution in which involvement of civil society, non-government organisations and educational institutions are needed.
"Police are holding meetings with people to caution them against mob violence but their effort will have multiple effects if other sections of the society also join the campaign," Chaubey said.

Meanwhile, Koderma police have registered two cases in connection with mob violence under the Jainagar area.
Koderma superintemndent of police M Tamil Banan said one case is related to mob violence and the other one is in connection with obstructing government officials from work.
