A father has been mocked online after admitting he will no longer call his 20-month-old daughter 'pretty' or 'cute' as he wants to avoid being a part of the patriarchal system.

The unidentified parent's concerns were shared on Twitter by American writer Elizabeth Bruenig, 28, from Washington, DC, on Tuesday.

A screen-grab of his note was posted, which also said that he was a supporter of 'equal rights' and how he believed he was always 'part of the problem'.

However those responding to the tweet mocked his words and one even called it 'sad and pathetic'.

The note said: 'I've stopped calling my daughter pretty and cute. I'm a father of a 20-month-old girl and she is incredible in a bar amount of ways, like pretty much any parent will tell you, of course.

'However, recently I've found myself doing something that kind of upsets me: I'm catching myself calling her "pretty", "cute", and other words that solely focus on her physique.'

He continued: 'It really bothers me, because I never thought of myself as a patriarchal man. I'm an avid supporter of equal rights and I always believed that I was part of the problem.

'Well... I am. And it's ingrained in my very fabric apparently and it legit scares me.'

Reaction: Many social media users were quick to disagree with the father's approach

But despite the seriousness he portrayed behind his concerns, social media users were quick to mock the man for his worries.

Mrs Bruenig posted the comment with the caption: 'Think you can probably take a chill pill on this one.'

Her followers agreed, with one adding: 'You... you can keep calling her those things if they're not the only things you praise about her? this isn't complicated.'

Another said: 'I call my baby son pretty and cute. I guess I'm fighting the patriarchy?'

'The only safe compliment as a parent is to silently give babies a thumbs up', a third social media user joked.

However, some did agree with the father and praised him for being aware of the issue.

'All little girls in my family are "sweetie" and all little boys are "buddy"', one internet users admitted.

'It's something I take note of. I do believe that systematic differences add up. Doesn't mean I can't ever call my nieces pretty. But I think awareness is good.'
