As WB govt passes 'anti-lynching bill', youth lynched to death in Behrampore

Despite the passing of the anti-lynching bill in West Bengal Assembly, a youth died after he was lynched by a mob in Berhampore.

The incident occurred in a doctor's chamber of a chemist shop located near Lal Dighi, Berhampore.

According to reports, At 11 am today, Sabir entered the doctor's chamber in his absence and started to create a ruckus. After listening to the ruckus, the compounder of the chemist shop called other people who tied his hands and feet beat him to death with pebbles.

The deceased, Sabir Sheikh was a carpenter by profession.

The body was taken for postmortem and the owner of the chemist shop was detained.

The police are currently investigating the CCTV footage for further leads.

West Bengal on August 30 became the second state after Rajasthan to pass the anti-lynching bill. Speaking about the bill in Assembly, Mamata Banerjee gave call for a Renaissance in West Bengal. She said that Supreme Court had asked for the bill to be passed. But the Centre is yet to do anything about it. Bengal has taken the lead and passed the anti-lynching bill, said West Bengal CM. 

Regarding incidents of mob violence including lynching, Mamata said that no one has the right to take law in their own hand. She said that police should be informed in case of a grievance. Mamata Banerjee said that Centre, state and police across the country have to work hand in hand to stop this social menace. Mamata said that Bengal has always taken the lead when the country has been in crisis, and here again it has done so.
