Madurai MP. Su. Venkatesan has urged Southern Railway General Manger Rahul Jain to avoid posting of North Indian railway officials, who do not have working knowledge in Tamil, in commercial and other duties wherein they need to interact with general public.
He raised this issue with the General Manager at a meeting of MPs under the jursidictions of Madurai and Tiruchi Railway Divisions in Tiruchi on Wednesday.
He said 247 station masters out of 492 in Tiruchi railway division and 220 out of 483 station masters in Madurai railway division were from Hindi-speaking States.
Similarly, there were 160 employees in commercial section who do not know Tamil, he said. These staff members were posted in railway ticket booking counters, in parcel offices, in the posts of booking clerks, and travelling ticket examiners.
Stating that these officials whose primary job was to interact with the travelling public, he said these officials could not effectively interact with the passengers who knew only Tamil.
He appealed to the General Manager that vacancies in such posts should be filled with people from Tamil Nadu.
