After 50mm rain, Diamond City moves inch by inch

Traffic at cable stay bridge
After another spell of heavy rain drenched diamond city on Wednesday morning, traffic on all in many areas came to a standstill owing to the water-filled craters along with large cracks that have developed on major roads of the city.
If that’s not all, office goers also got stranded due to water logging in many areas. A few incidents of uprooting of trees also led to four cars getting damaged while two persons were trapped near Majuragate after a tree fell on their cars. They were brought out safely by fire officials.
Roofs of two houses in Bhestan were blown away while three incidents of short circuits, too, were reported.
Traffic jam was witnessed in many areas of the central zone, Athwa, Umra, Ring Road and station areas of the city. Uneven roads led to the major slowing down of traffic during peak hours in these areas.
In two hours, central zone which received 42mm of rain, resulted in water pools on the roads forcing drivers to slow down to avoid damage to their vehicles. This created jams on major parts of the Ring Road and the flyovers passing through Ring Road.
“These areas and especially the Ring Road flyovers witness heavy traffic density up to 10-12,000 vehicles per hour during peak hours of 11am to 2 pm and from 7 pm to 9 pm. After the heavy rain during the peak hours, traffic movement become sluggish in these parts, thereby creating a big jam for the period,” said an official from central zone.
In Athwa zone near Parle Point starting from SVNIT circle, traffic woes started by noon and as it poured, vehicles started getting stuck in the pouring rain between parle point flyover and the road leading up to new cable stay bridge. While in normal days it takes around seven minutes to cross the kilometre-long stretch from SVNIT to the end of Parle point bridge, people complained that it took them more than 15 minutes to negotiate this stretch in the pouring rain on Wednesday.

Similarly, traffic jams were witnessed in many parts of old city areas like Majura gate and Bhagal areas. In Rander an old house near Sunipara Masjid was shaken during the rain and some portion of the roof top fell from the old, dilapidated, and empty house but no one was injured as these houses were empty.
During the day, central zone recorded maximum of 46 mm of rains, while Limbayat zone recorded 59mm, Athwa zone 32mm and Rander zone got 30mm of rain.
