Perth groom-to-be fighting for life in Bali hospital after scooter crash
Perth man Ashley Hickman was due to marry his fiancé this weekend, but the 32-year-old is fighting for life in a Balinese hospital instead.
Mr Hickman travelled to the Indonesian island for a bucks weekend away with friends but the celebrations turned tragic after he crushed his skull in a serious moped accident.
He had travel insurance and was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but the groom-to-be did not hold an international drivers' license for the moped.
The 32-year-old, who grew up in Perth but lives in Cairns, is currently in a coma at Kuta Hospital's intensive care unit after undergoing surgery last Saturday to relieve pressure on his brain and stop the bleeding.
However, hospital bills are quickly stacking up, with costs exceeding $50,000 and a costly repatriation to Perth set to take place on Friday.
Mr Hickman's family has set up an online fundraising page to cover some of the medical expenses with more than 300 people donating almost $20,000 in two days.
"We are still unsure of the full extent of his head injuries at this stage but medical costs have already exceeded $50,000," sister Brooke Parker wrote on the page.
"We are hoping by Friday Ashley is stable enough to be repatriated to Perth as it was $40,000 cheaper than coming back to Cairns and we have family in Perth.
"The repatriation is $52,000 alone so please keep sharing."
