Employee’s wife used data against him

The CBD Belapur police have booked the manager of a State Bank of India (SBI) branch under the Information Technology Act for giving out an employee’s bank account details to his wife, who used it against him in a divorce case.

Ashish Mishra (40), a resident of Kamothe, had got married in 2010, and his wife would often accompany him to official functions, where she became friendly with many of his colleagues. In 2016, she filed for a divorce.

According to the complaint registered by Mr. Mishra, his wife, in every hearing, mentioned that he had a lot of money in his overdraft account. “The complainant got suspicious as his wife was able to access the bank balance despite it being a personal account and filed an RTI,” an officer from Belapur police station said. The bank initially did not reveal details, saying the procedure was vast, but a complaint filed at its main branch in Nariman Point revealed the name of bank manager Nidhi Rai.

A case was registered against her under Section 72A of the IT Act. “The manager should not reveal any customer’s bank details to a third person. If we find enough evidence against Ms. Rai, she will be arrested,” police inspector Sanjay Chavan said.
