PUNE: The
Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Wednesday arrested a man who was allegedly absconding for the past 10 years after he was booked in a theft case.
The police identified the suspect as Uday Vishnu Awate (42) from
Sangli.
Sub inspector Subrao Lad of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said,“The complainant Savita Satish Pawar and Awate are known to each other as they were residing in the same locality at Narayani Dham near
Katraj. Awate used to often visit Savita’s residence for some or the other work and stole 26gm gold ornaments from her residence between July and December 2009.”
Lad said, “Savita, a homemaker, found her ornaments missing and suspected Awate for stealing it as he had stopped visiting her residence. When the woman confronted Awate, he admitted of taking her ornaments but promised to return it as soon as possible.”
He said, “Awate on some or the other pretext avoided returning the ornament to Savita. After all efforts to receive the ornament proved futile, the woman registered a complaint against him under section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code with the Bharati Vidyapeeth police in 2015.”
“We have launched a drive for arresting absconding and wanted suspects. Policemen Mahesh Mandalik and Abhijit Jadhav worked on certain clues and received information that Awate was residing at Kundal, Palus taluka in
Satara district. A police team then arrested him from his residence and recovered the gold ornaments intact from his possession,” he added.
