YAMUNANAGAR: A 23-year-old woman in Yamunanagar district of Haryana committed suicide allegedly over 'police inaction' on her rape complaint. The incident took place outside the Jathlana police station on Monday night, where the woman and her family had gone to know the status of her complaint. Following the suicide incident, two police officers have been suspended. On Tuesday, police claimed to have arrested three accused in the case.
The woman's family members accused local police officials of not acting on her complaint, which was submitted 12 days ago. Police said she took some poisonous substance and was taken to a local hospital, where she died.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the victim was married in April 2016. When the couple did not have child, her in-laws started harassing her. According to the victim's father, she later met a woman who offered to help her and also get a divorce. He alleged that the woman and accomplices misled his daughter and forced her into flesh trade. "They would give her intoxicants and then started blackmailing after clicking some photos and videos of her. All this happened between May 10 and July this year," he alleged.
The victim's father said she managed to contact her uncle after which they contacted the village sarpanch and rescued her. "We appeared before the Yamunanagar SP on August 13 and 19. The women police officers recorded the statements of my daughter. Till Monday, the police officers concerned did not register any case against the accused. My daughter was mentally stressed and committed suicide after consuming a poisonous substance at Jathlana police station," he alleged.

"Two police officers - officiating SHO of Jathlana, Chanderpal, and assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Naresh Kumar - have been suspended. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against them. A case has also been registered and three accused arrested," Yamunanagar superintendent of police (SP) Kuldeep Singh said.
Radaur DSP Kushal Singh said acting on the complaint of the victim's father, a case against seven accused has been registered under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 370 (trafficking of persons) and 376 (rape) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Jathlana. He said three accused Manoj, Sandeep and Pardyuman were arrested on Tuesday.
