Residents prepare to flee as out-of-control Scenic Rim bushfire rages

Scenic Rim residents are being warned to prepare to abandon their homes as an out-of-control bushfire burns in terrain difficult for firefighters to access.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service warned on Wednesday that residents in Sarabah, about 30 kilometres south-west of the heart of the Gold Coast, should be ready to evacuate.

Two water-bombing aircraft and 13 fire trucks were fighting the bushfire, but the situation could worsen quickly, according to the fire service.

"You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have a plan ... you should be ready to leave the area because the situation could get worse quickly," QFES warned.

"A large fire is burning in difficult terrain between Sarabah Road and Upper Coomera Road, Sarabah.

"The eastern side of the fire near Rowe Road is travelling south-easterly towards Upper Coomera Road.

"The western side of the fire near Curtis Road is burning in a north-easterly direction.

"Firefighters are working to contain the blaze but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door.

"Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions as firefighters are working alongside Sarabah Road, Upper Coomera Road, Rowe Road and Toe Holt Road.

"People in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality."

Locals have been encouraged to listen to their local radio station, monitor the Rural Fire Service website, finalise their bushfire survival plan and protect any animals on their property.

Residents should also close any windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure and fill containers with drinking and firefighting water.
