A mobile application developed by a student of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Sri City is expected to become a major tool in providing the message on water management to the farming community.
The app developed by second-year student Lushaank Kancherla was released by Denduluru MLA Abbayya Choudary at a programme organised by Jal Shakti Abhiyan in ICAR’s Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research (IIOPR), Pedavegi, West Godavari district on Tuesday, in the presence of Sri City Director G. Kannabiran and IIOPR Director R.K. Mathur. The application informs the farmers on the actual amount of water required for oil palm plantations for a given day or week or month. At present, the app provides daily, weekly and monthly plan for the quantity of water to be supplied to palm trees in various locations of Andhra Pradesh.
“It is proposed to take the app forward by integrating dynamic data such as weather and rainfall on a weekly basis and provide critical information on water management to the farmers. We have also proposed to extend the services to farmers in five more States in the next phase,” Prof. Kannabiran said.
New generation IT tools such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big data have significant implications for a predominantly-agrarian State like Andhra Pradesh. “In this background, IIIT Sri City is proposing to set up a ‘Centre for IT enabled Agriculture’ to reach IT solutions to this sector,” Prof. Kannabiran added.
