Negligence causing health hazards, say residents

Overflowing bin and garbage scattered on the road is a common sight outside the office of the Corporation Sanitary Inspector (Malaria) at S.K.C. Road here.

Residential areas and commercial establishments are present in large numbers in the area where three bins are placed. One bin outside the Health Department office is overflowing and is yet to be cleared in the past four days. Residents said that the negligence is causing health hazards to the people in the area.

They said that plastic waste and other wastes generated by establishments, including cardboard boxes, were usually dumped in the bin forcing residents to dump garbage outside the bin. Since, garbage collected from each household is dumped in the bin, it needs to be cleared regularly. However, the bin is not cleared turning it into be a breeding site for mosquitoes, said a resident.

Shopkeepers and traders in the area said that piled up garbage occupies the road space causing inconvenience to road users also. The road is being dug for various works in the past two years and is yet to be re-laid.

Garbage is also not cleared on time, they added. They said that community dogs thrive solely from the garbage in and around the bins and pose a threat to the residents. They wanted the garbage to be cleared regularly so that sanitation prevails in the area.
