DEO orders probe, police register case

A nine-year-old boy from Sundruputtu died on Sunday, eight days after he was allegedly severely beaten by his teacher.

The student, S. Mohana Krishna, of the Dumbriguda mandal, a Class II student of Mandal Parishad Primary School, Sundruputtu, was beaten on August 24, and he died while undergoing treatment on September 1.

Paderu Sub-Inspector Sheikh Nazeer said the police had registered a case on September 2 on a complaint from the father, S Ram Murthy, who alleged his son died after being severely beaten by a lady teacher. Referring to the complaint, Mr. Nazeer said: “On August 24, Krishna was severely beaten by his teacher and there were visible injuries from thighs to the knees. The next day, the boy complained of severe pain on the affected areas. He was then taken to a hospital, where he was given first aid and sent back. On August 29, Krishna again complained of pain and uneasiness and his parents then shifted him to Araku area hospital on August 30. In the statement, his parents stated Krishna's legs started to swell and he developed breathing problems.”

Late on September 1, the boy was referred to King George Hospital here. However, the child died while he was being shifted to the KGH in an ambulance, the police said.

Paderu Police have registered a case under section 174 CrPC (cause of death unknown) and investigation is on.

Report awaited

District Education Officer B. Lingeshwara Reddy, who has ordered an inquiry into the incident, said, “We cannot initiate action against a teacher with just allegations from parents. We are waiting for the post-mortem report, which would ascertain the actual reason for the boy’s death.”
