An inter-State check-post set up at Zalki village in Vijayapura district, which had become infamous for rampant corruption, is being demolished.
There have been several protests by lorry owners and members of lorry drivers’ associations against officials posted at the check-post for allegedly demanding bribe for letting vehicles pass.
Over 50,000 vehicles cross the check-post on national highway 13 every day. There have been reports of stiff competition among officials to get posted at the check-post as it was considered “lucrative”.
The demolition of the around three-decade-old post started on Tuesday as widening of the highway has gained pace.
According to sources, the check-post is being removed to avoid traffic congestion on the highway.
There is a proposal to set up a check-post at Anachi village near Dulkhed at the border of Karnataka and Maharashtra. With this, vehicles going to Maharashtra will now pass directly through Chadachan town.
