NEW DELHI: Congress on Tuesday released a 16-second clip of former Union minister P
Chidambaram being led by a posse of security personnel, captioned: 'Why he is feared by the BJP govt'.
In the clip, the former minister raises his palm and mouths "5%" when asked by mediapersons for comment. Asked what he meant by 5%, a smiling Chidambaram shoots back, "What is 5%? You don't remember 5%?" referring to the GDP growth figure, the lowest in six years.
Though he might be considered an odd choice to articulate the party position, considering his current circumstances and that he might be close to be sent to judicial custody, Congress appeared to back its claim of BJP's "vendetta politics" against Chidambaram.
After Rahul Gandhi, sister Priyanka and former PM Manmohan Singh slammed the ruling dispensation over alleged "failure" to deal with the "man-made crisis" in the economy, senior leader Jairam Ramesh attacked Niti Aayog chairman Amitabh Kant for tweeting a report questioning slowdown in the auto sector. "Ever wonder what NITI in Niti Aayog stands for? It's clearly 'Not In Touch with India'. Five consecutive quarters of declining GDP growth and now this," the former environment minister tweeted.
Priyanka, who has tweeted on the economic crisis several times, criticised the government again.
"Till when will the government make do with headline management?" she asked on Twitter. She also told the government that repeating the same lie a hundred times - that there is no recession - will not alter the reality.
Asking the government to admit that there was a "historic slowdown" and move towards resolving it, she said the slowdown was visible and that "managing headlines" would no longer cover the truth.
