The incoming BJP president will face an uphill task for the next one year in the Dravidian heartland, which is heading to local body polls and assembly elections in the next 18 months. The national party is also going through member enrolment drive and is scheduled to conduct polls for party organisational posts starting from September 11.
Chennai:
Though BJP was not able to make a cut in State politics, its outgoing party chief Tamilisai managed to hold the alliance partners in the State despite the drubbing it received in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. There have been no political controversies revolving around Tamilisai and she never antagonised even her political rivals, Shyam noted.
“Several tasks and challenges are awaiting the new president. Strengthening the party will be the first challenge and then the party internal election process has to be completed by September,” KT Raghavan, State secretary of the party told DT Next. “When it comes to holding grass-root level elections, ours is a completely democratic party. After the panchayat ward level elections, zonal and district level elections will take place by next month. Subsequently, the local body polls seem likely by the end of this year. And in 2020, the State will get into the Assembly poll mood,” Raghavan said.
“The main challenge for the new president will be to strengthen the party in TN. Delhi must be crystal clear with the new BJP president on its agenda in the State,” said political analyst Raveendran Duraisamy. As far the poll alliances are concerned, the national party is unable to earn its due space in TN, a predicament that the new party chief would have to overcome, Duraisamy added.
According to sources in BJP State headquarters, factors like poll alliance, particularly wooing superstar Rajinikanth, towards the alliance, fighting the DMK- Congress combine and the virulent campaign by the pro-Tamil parties would be among the tough challenges awaiting the new BJP chief.
“The search for the leader to replace Tamilisai Soundararajan as the State BJP president has already become the most discussed topic within the BJP and right-wing followers in the State. Identifying the right person for the post is certainly a tough job for the BJP top brass,” opined political commentator Tharasu Shyam.
